New Year, New You!

At the beginning of every new year so many of us traditionally make a new years’ resolution or resolutions, whereby a person resolves to continue good practices, change an undesired trait or behaviour, accomplish a personal goal, or otherwise improve their life. However, statistics show that the majority will fail by the end of the first week in January.

“The reason most people fail to achieve their New Years’ resolution is because they set themselves up to fail from the start by setting themselves an unrealistic goal that is too big. An element of success needs to become evident in a short amount of time to boost our drive and motivation for our resolutions to be achieved.”

Tips for success include:

· Set yourself a realistic goal with a realistic timescale. E.g., reducing your weight by two stone in one month would not be realistic but reducing your weight by two stone over four/five months would be realistic and with some effort achievable.

· Break final goal into small chunks, taking one step at a time – instead of focusing on the final goal which may not be achieved for a few months consider what changes you can make in the next week/month/months. E.g., you may wish to reduce your weight by two stone, realistically this may take a few months so think how much would be achievable in a week and then how much could be achieved in a month. Each step that is achieved will help boost your motivation, so you are more likely to reach your desired goal.

· Focus on the benefits to your life on reaching your desired goal – how good will you feel when you reach your goal? E.g., reducing your weight by two stone could make you feel fitter, healthier, happier, more energised, and more confident.

· Ask your family and friends for moral support – support and encouragement from those around us can help with motivation.
